Welcome to new sponsor, Tag Along Toys!

Do you ever go into a shop for children and just feel the wonder of being surrounded by childhood? That's what it's like to walk into Tag Along Toys in Kanata's Signature Centre (499 Terry Fox Drive) or Blue Heron Mall (1500 Bank Street.)

Above you there are clouds and all around you are toys, toys, toys! I had the opportunity to go to the store a few weeks ago and speak with Patti Taggart, the proud owner of the store. She has good reason to be proud. The store has such a great variety of toys and Patti makes a point of looking for toys that will help children learn.

There are choices for the smallest people...

Patti told me that her favourite section of the store is the crafts section and it's easy to see why when you get a glimpse of the incredible selection. There's so much to choose from!

Every kid a card -welcoming a new sponsor

Do your kids have their own library cards? We'd like to welcome the Ottawa Public Library as our newest sponsor as we help them promote their Every Kid a Card initiative. We are already big supporters of the library and love and look forward to their monthly contributions to Kids in the Capital.

A library card gives you free access to:

• Computers to use for free for up two hours a day

Welcome to the Ottawa School of Speech and Drama!

by Brie We are thrilled to welcome The Ottawa School of Speech and Drama as  a new Kids in the Capital sponsor!

The Ottawa School of Speech and Drama is Ottawa’s pre-eminent acting school for children, youth and adults. They offer classes for kids of all ages in acting and musical theather. I love that they even offer classes for the 18 month to 3 year old set.

The Ottawa School of Speech and Drama also offers March Break Camps and Summer Camps for kids ages 6 and older. With Summer Camps ranging from five to fourteen days, they offer the perfect way for interested kids to get immersed into the world of theater.

Having attended acting classes for fours years as a kid back in Winnipeg I have a soft spot for drama school. Drama classes play off the inherent creativity of kids and provide them with an environment for their ideas to flourish. And let kids have fun at the same time!

Soloway JCC: Kids in the Capital's latest sponsor

by Brie We are very excited to welcome a new sponsor to Kids in the Capital: The Soloway Jewish Community Centre (JCC) of Ottawa!

The JCC has lots of great services and programs on offer for kids and families. From its salt water pool to its youth programs and birthday party packages, there is sure to be something of interest for every family.

Through friends I have heard great things about the JCC summer camps. In fact, two friends have already registered their kids for summer camps and the snow is nowhere near ready to leave us. The JCC of Ottawa runs a variety of different camps throughout the summer including Day Camps (age 2-15). Each week of the day camp program has a unique and exciting theme, like Magical Scientists, The Joy of Cooking or Tropical Paradise, so you can pick a theme that would be the best fit for your kids and not worry about repetition when you send them for multiple weeks.

Traveling Sports Camp (age 7-15) offers kids a totally unique experience as it is the only camp in the city that takes campers on a field trip every day. Traveling Sports Campers spend the morning at the Soloway JCC where they learn about a wide range of sports and have instructional swimming lessons. After lunch they hop on a bus for a different adventure every day. Some of the trips planned for this summer include Calypso Water Park, horseback riding, ice skating, bowling, go-karting, water skiing, NCC beaches and more. The Traveling Sports Camp and Day Camp include instructional swimming lessons plus a free swim every day.

Finally, there are 13 Specialty Camps (age 5-15) throughout the summer.  Specialty Camps include: Girls on the Go, Fit Kids Have Fun!, Horseback Riding Camp, The Great Adventure, Dryland Hockey Camp, Tennis Camp, You Go Girl!, Triple Threat, Soccer Camp, Summertime Splash, Basketball Camp, Girl Power Camp and Last Blast.
